HISTORICAL FACTS ABOUT THE 69 EYES GROUP
Time – early 90s, scene – Helsinki, Finland. Hanging out with friends in the bars, Bazi, who was playing the drum kit at the time in the beginner group, met Yuri. As it turned out, their musical tastes coincided and the next group they collect together. It so happened that Bazi began to play the guitar, and Yurki – to sing. Since then, the responsibilities for creating new songs have been distributed in the same way: Yuki composes words, and Bazi composes music. Timo Timo became the rhythm guitarist of the young band. The search for the bass player dragged on for a while. But after Bazi, again in one of the bars, met Archie, this problem disappeared – Archie came to the rehearsal and immediately gets into the stream. The last to join the group was the drummer Jussi69. So a new legend was born – The 69 Eyes.
The young group signs a contract with Gaga Goodies. By the end of the 90s. they released several singles and 4 full albums – “Bump’n’Grind” in 1992, “Savage Garden” in 1995, and in 1995 in Japan (!!!) a collection of the group “Motor City Resurrection”
was released and more followed by a stunning collection of punk metal tunes – “Wrap Your Troubles In Dreams” in 1997. This is not counting tribute albums. By then, The 69 Eyes were becoming cult idols of Finnish glam and punk rock. In 1996, Yurki and Claude, the leader of the glam group Smack, recorded Fellow Reptiles. In the same 1996, Jussi69 and Archie took part in the project of Andy McCoy (Andy McCoy) and Pete Malmi (Pete Malmi) – Briard.
Records, interviews, tours – England, Sweden, Italy … The popularity of the group is growing steadily … Gradually, the cult status of The 69 Eyes goes beyond the borders of native Finland – a fan club has been organized in Japan, which exists to this day.
Finally, in 1998, The 69 Eyes took a break to recover from the turbulent years of rock and roll chaos and reborn again or disappear forever …
Historical Facts About The 69 Eyes
Ville Valo and Jyrki69
This period of the group’s life is shrouded in mystery. But The 69 Eyes would not be The 69 Eyes if they didn’t come back on stage again in triumph – in 1999 the album “Wasting The Dawn” was released – the band’s first international release on the famous label Roadrunner Records. This album has opened a new dimension in the gloomy world of The 69 Eyes. They say that, standing at the crossroads of his own ideas, Yurki wandered around the Rock Corner Helsinki bar and offered to listen to the demo disc Wasting The Dawn to everyone who tucked into his arm. Probably, the group was lucky that VIMO Valo from HIM turned out to be one of those who turned up. Largely thanks to him, the sound of the group, starting from that record, has changed a lot: now it is Gothic melancholy mixed with the strong energy of rock and roll. The 69 Eyes opened a new style of music – goth’n’roll.
In the spring of 2000, the group released the single “Gothic Girl”, he stayed on Top10 on the Finnish national radio for several months and received a “golden” status. It was at this time in the life of the group that their magical genius appeared – producer Johnny Lee Michaels, who becomes like the sixth member of the group, arranging all the songs and recording keyboard parts.
In August 2000, the recording of the new album “Blessed Be” was completed, and the group went on a tour of Germany, as part of which they performed at the largest Gothic festival M’era Luna. This tour closed one chapter in the history of the group and, at the same time, opened a new one … In September 2000 the album “Blessed Be” was released, which immediately hit the most prestigious charts in Finland and Germany.
Another tour … even more chaos, darkness and broken hearts … The tracks “The Chair”, “Stolen Season” and “Brandon Lee” from the album “Blessed Be” were released as singles. The largest Finnish music magazine Soundi called The 69 Eyes the No. 1 band among Finnish bands.
In October 2001, The 69 Eyes, along with Johnny Lee Miles (Johnny Lee Michaels) again returned to the studio to record the new album “Paris Kills”. In December, the first single “Dance d’Amour” was released from it, and immediately fell to the first lines of all the charts in Finland, and, having stayed there in January and February, it became “gold”.
Having released the next single “Betty Blue”, the group spends the whole summer of 2002 at various music festivals, and autumn – on a dizzying tour of Europe. Germany, Italy, Austria, Switzerland – the new motto of the group “Gothic for the masses” is received with a bang by old and new fans, whose army is growing every day. This is followed by a short rest and a Finnish tour – at home they almost carry the group in their arms. On November 23, 2002, the band’s concert at the cult Tavastia Helsinki Club was filmed for release on DVD.
Gothic, rock, elegance and the power of guitar chords, which are stained on the spot stadiums – these are the weapons of The 69 Eyes. Vampires from Helsinki have already conquered half the world and they are not going to stop there, because there are still so many unbroken hearts. Maybe tomorrow they will be in your city … Beware!
