Metallica is an American metal band formed in 1981. Performs music in the style of thrash metal and heavy metal.
Metallica has had a great influence on the development of metal and is included (along with bands such as Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax) in the “Big Four Thrash Metal”. Metallica’s albums have sold a total of more than 100 million copies worldwide, making it one of the most commercially successful metal bands. In 2011, one of the largest metal music magazines Kerrang! in a June issue, Metallica recognized as the best metal band in the last 30 years.
The song Nothing Else Matters begins with busting on open 1, 2, 3 and 6 strings. James Hetfield began to compose it, talking on the phone, because of which he had only one hand free.
The song Wherever I May Roam is quoted in the computer game Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos. The character “Bandit” pronounces the phrase: “Tramp, wanderer, nomad, wanderer – call me what you want” (“Roamer, wanderer, nomad, vagabond, call me what you will“).And “Bistmaster” says: “Where I bow my head, there is a house. Do you see a stone? This is my pillow ”(” Where I lay my head is home. See that rock? That’s my pillow “).
During the US invasion of Iraq in 2003, the song Enter Sandman was used in prisons. She was played by intractable prisoners to “break their resistance by stuffing them with culturally alien music.” Also, American children’s songs were used for these purposes, including music from the children’s television show “The Barney Dinosaur”.
Nothing Else Matters is Metallica’s only song (with the exception of Cliff Burton’s bass solo titled (Anesthesia) Pulling Teeth), recorded without the participation of Kirk Hammett. In response to a fan question in So What! James confirmed that he recorded all the guitar parts for Nothing Else Matters himself.
The lyrics to One are inspired by Hetfield’s Dalton Trumbo novel Johnny Got His Gun, which tells the story of a World War I soldier who was blown up by a mine and lost her limbs and senses, but no less continuing to live biologically and retaining the ability to think in such conditions. In One, the listener is presented with mental nightmares and feelings of a person in a similar situation – another of the meaningless victims of wars. On this song in January 1989 the first video clip in the history of Metallica (directed by Michael Salomon and Bill Pope) was shot.
Kirk Hammett tells how the famous Enter Sandman riff was written: “Soundgarden just released their Louder Than Love. I tried to catch their work with big, heavy riffs. It was two in the morning, I put down the cassette and forgot about it. When Lars Ulrich heard the riff, he said: “This is great. Just repeat the first part four times. ” And that made him even more catchy. ”
James Hetfield confessed that the intro (rising wind sound) of Unforgiven was borrowed from a single Western movie and played back, so it’s extremely difficult to recognize. Fearing claims from the copyright holders, the group does not admit what kind of film it was.
There is speculation that this is a 1965 film For A Few Dollars More with Clint Eastwood, respectively, “The Showdown” authored by Enio Morricone.
In the introduction to the song Don’t Tread On Me, eight beats from the famous song “America”, written by Leonard Bernstein for the musical West Side Story, are heard.
One critic, stunned by Nothing Else Matters, said that Metallica is the only heavy metal band that a respectable adult can listen to without feeling like his IQ uncontrollably tends to zero.
Whiskey in the Jar is a famous Irish folk song. The text tells of a robber who robbed an official and then convicted his wife of treason. It was performed by many modern bands, including U2 and Thin Lizzy, however, the version of Metallica is rightfully considered one of the most successful and even won the Grammy award in 1998.
