Definition of Rock Music

Rock music (Eng. Rock music) – the generalized name of many areas of music. The word “rock” – rocking – in this case indicates the rhythmic sensations characteristic of these directions associated with a certain form of movement, by analogy with “roll”, “twist”, “swing”, “shake”, etc. Such signs rock music, such as the use of electric musical instruments, creative self-sufficiency (rock musicians are characterized by the performance of their own compositions) are secondary and often misleading. For this reason, the belonging of some styles of music to rock is disputed. Rock is also a special subcultural phenomenon; subcultures such as fashion, hippies, punks, metallers, goths are inextricably linked with certain genres of rock music.

Rock music has a large number of areas: from light genres such as dance rock and roll, pop rock, britpop to brutal and aggressive genres – death metal and hardcore. The content of the songs ranges from light and laid-back to gloomy, deep and philosophical. Often rock music is contrasted with pop music, and so on. “Pop”, although there is no clear boundary between the concepts of “rock” and “pop”, and many musical phenomena balance on the verge between them.

The origins of rock music lie in the blues, from which the first rock genres came out – rock and roll and rockabilly. The first subgenres of rock music arose in close connection with folk and pop music of that time – first of all, it was folk, country, skiffle, and music hall. During its existence, there have been attempts to combine rock music with almost all possible types of music – with academic music (art rock, appears in the late 60s), jazz (jazz rock, appears in the late 60s – early 70s ), Latin music (Latin rock, appears in the late 60s), Indian music (raga rock, appears in the mid-60s). In the 60-70s, almost all the largest subgenres of rock music appeared, the largest of which, in addition to the above, are hard rock, punk rock, rock avant-garde. In the late 70s and early 80s, rock genres such as post-punk, new wave, alternative rock, wheat rock (although early representatives of this trend appeared in the late 60s), hardcore (a large subgenre punk rock), as well as brutal subgenres of metal – death metal, black metal. In the 90s, grunge genres (appeared in the mid-80s), Britpop (appears in the mid-60s), alternative metal (appears in the late 80s) were widely developed.

The main centers of origin and development of rock music are the USA and western Europe (especially Great Britain). Most of the lyrics are in English. However, although, as a rule, and with some delay, national rock music appeared in almost all countries. Russian-language rock music (the so-called Russian rock) appeared in the USSR already in the 1960-1970s. and reached a peak of development in the 1980s, continuing to develop in the 1990s.

Rock is, on the one hand, the mouthpiece of youth, the musical embodiment of the conflicting moods that tear it apart, a conflict with generally accepted norms. On the other hand, rock is one of the tools of show business aimed at commercial profit in the entertainment industry. This double nature determines the contradictions, the “sawtoothness” of the development of the genre.

In fact, the whole history of rock consists of similar cycles, at the beginning of each of which – rebellion, protest, the birth of new styles and new values, the emergence of groups and performers-founders of the style (1955, 1967, 1977, …), and then – gradual the process of “taming”, commercialization, sometimes simplification, the emergence of secondary rock groups.

Rock music as a cultural phenomenon gave rise to the so-called “rock and roll lifestyle”, a certain style of behavior and a system of life values, a kind of philosophy. Nevertheless, the subcultures that arose on the basis of various currents of rock music sometimes have little in common. Rock music has a relatively large exciting energy (drive). It can give a person freedom from established social principles and stereotypes, from surrounding reality.

On the other hand, a person who is passionate about rock culture can finally shield himself from the outside world, aggravating the situation with the use of alcohol and drugs, which contributes to the destruction of personality. Often this phenomenon is blamed on rock musicians.
